How Tanki Finds You Cheap Petrol

Tanki pulls live pricing data from the GOV.UK Fuel Finder API, which requires every major UK fuel retailer to report their prices within 30 minutes of any change. That means the prices you see on Tanki are as close to real-time as possible.

Simply open the app, allow location access, and you'll instantly see the cheapest unleaded petrol stations sorted by price within your chosen radius. You can also search by postcode or town name if you're planning ahead.

Unleaded E10

The standard petrol sold at every UK station. Contains up to 10% ethanol. Compatible with most cars made after 2011.

Super Unleaded E5

Premium petrol with max 5% ethanol. Required for some older or high-performance vehicles. Typically 10-15p more per litre.

Sorted by Price

Tanki defaults to showing the cheapest stations first, so you always know where to save the most.

Full Tank Savings

We calculate how much you'd save on a 55-litre fill compared to the area average. Even 3p/litre saves you £1.65.

Tips for Finding Cheaper Petrol

Supermarkets are usually cheapest

Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury's, and Morrisons consistently offer the lowest fuel prices. They use fuel as a loss leader to get you into the store. Tanki shows you exactly which supermarket near you has the best price right now.

Avoid motorway services

Motorway fuel stations typically charge 15-20p more per litre than nearby alternatives. That's over £8 extra on a full tank. If you're on a long journey, use Tanki to find a cheaper station just off the motorway.

Fill up early in the week

Prices tend to be slightly lower on Mondays and Tuesdays. By Friday, especially before bank holidays, prices often creep up as demand increases.

Check before you drive

Use Tanki to compare prices before setting off. There's no point driving 10 miles to save 1p per litre — but if there's a station 1 mile away that's 5p cheaper, that's worth knowing.

UK Petrol Price Data

All petrol prices on Tanki come from the official GOV.UK Fuel Finder service. Since 2024, UK fuel retailers with 100 or more filling stations are legally required to report price changes within 30 minutes. This means our data covers the vast majority of UK stations including all supermarkets and major brands.

For retailers not yet submitting to the government API (such as Asda and Esso), we source prices directly from their own published data as a fallback, ensuring comprehensive coverage.
