Connector Types Explained

CCS (Combined Charging System)

The UK and European standard for DC rapid charging. Supports up to 350kW. Found on most modern EVs including BMW, VW, Hyundai, Kia, and Mercedes.

Type 2

The universal AC connector used across Europe. Supports 3-22kW. Every EV sold in the UK today uses Type 2 for AC charging.

CHAdeMO

Japanese DC fast charging standard. Supports up to 100kW. Used by the Nissan Leaf and some older Mitsubishi and Toyota models. Being phased out in favour of CCS.

Tesla Supercharger

Tesla's proprietary network now largely uses CCS connectors in the UK. Many Supercharger sites are open to non-Tesla vehicles too.

Major UK Charging Networks

The UK has dozens of charging networks, each with their own apps and payment methods. The largest include:

Tanki shows chargers from all networks in one place, so you don't need to check multiple apps.

Tips for EV Charging

Charge to 80%, not 100%

The last 20% charges much slower due to battery protection. On a rapid charger, going from 20% to 80% might take 25 minutes, but 80% to 100% could take another 20 minutes. Unless you need the full range, stop at 80%.

Pre-condition your battery

In cold weather, use your car's pre-conditioning feature before arriving at a rapid charger. A warm battery charges significantly faster than a cold one.

Use Tanki's speed sort

If you're in a hurry, sort by "Fastest" to find the highest-powered charger near you. A 150kW charger will get you going much quicker than a 50kW one.
